Privacy Policy

Marine Weather is a marine planning app (maps, weather comparison, optional route planning). This policy describes what the app does on your device and what is sent over the network. The same product is available on Android and iOS; platform-specific details are noted below.

Who we are

Marine Weather is published as:

• Android: fi.veneappi.app (Google Play)
• iOS: fi.veneappi.MarineWeather (Apple App Store)

No account on our servers

Marine Weather does not require you to create an account with us. We do not operate a login server or store your identity on our own backend.

Location

• On your device: If you grant permission, the app uses GPS to centre the map on your position and to plan routes. Map centre coordinates are also used to request public weather summaries.
• Not uploaded to us: Your precise location is not sent to a developer-operated server. Coordinates are included only in requests your device makes directly to third-party weather and map services (see below), as required to fetch forecasts for that area.

Data stored on your device

Common to both platforms:

• Preferences: Wind unit choice and local route-trial timing.
• Cache: Downloaded forecast data may be cached locally to improve performance and reduce repeat downloads.
• Exports: If you export a route as GPX or PDF, files are written where you choose.

Android

• Preferences and trial timing are stored with Android DataStore.
• Forecast cache uses a local Room database.
• Premium entitlement is verified via Google Play Billing and remembered locally after purchase or restore.

iOS

• Preferences and trial timing are stored in the app sandbox (UserDefaults).
• Forecast cache uses SwiftData on device.
• Premium entitlement is verified via Apple StoreKit and remembered locally after purchase or restore.
• AIS watchlist entries (if you use Track) are stored locally on the device.

Network and third-party services

The app needs internet access to load maps and weather. Your device contacts public APIs and tile servers, for example:

• Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) open data
• MET Norway (api.met.no)
• SMHI open data
• OpenStreetMap-related services (e.g. OpenFreeMap tiles)
• Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency open raster charts (when enabled)
• Fintraffic Digitraffic (AIS vessel positions, when enabled)
• Google Play or Apple App Store (in-app purchases and subscriptions for route planning premium)

Each provider has its own terms and privacy practices. Requests typically include approximate coordinates, app version, and a technical User-Agent string (MarineWeather/…) so services can apply fair-use rules.

Payments

Android (Google Play)

Paid features are processed by Google Play Billing. We do not receive your payment card details. Google’s privacy policy applies to payment data.

iOS (App Store)

Paid features are processed by Apple In-App Purchase (StoreKit). We do not receive your payment card details. Apple’s privacy policy applies to payment data. Subscription management and cancellation are handled in your Apple ID settings. See also our Terms of Use.

Analytics and advertising

The app does not include third-party analytics SDKs or advertising networks.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and is intended for marine planning by adults.

Changes

We may update this policy. The effective date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.

Your rights

Android: Revoke location permission in system settings, clear app storage, or uninstall. For Google Play purchase issues, use Play Store subscription and order management.

iOS: Revoke location permission in Settings → Marine Weather, or uninstall the app. For App Store purchases and subscriptions, use Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, or reportaproblem.apple.com.
